Abstract

An all-fiber intermodal interferometer with a perfect platform formed by splicing a section of a D-shaped fiber between two sections of a singlemode fiber is proposed to measure the temporal response of magnetic fluids (MFs). The asymmetrical responses of the particle clustering effect and scattering effect for MFs based on the fiber by switching on/off the applied magnetic fields are firstly observed and discussed. Those effects explain the hysteresis effect and are beneficial for optimizing the composition of MFs and the performances of optical devices based on MFs. © 2013 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.
