Abstract

The political outcomes of entertainment media consumption have received considerable attention from researchers across disciplines. However, whether individuals’ entertainment preference affects democratic progress remains debatable. In the present study, this problem was approached from a psychological perspective. The mediation effects of hedonic and eudaimonic experiences on the correlation between entertainment preference and political interest were investigated. To test the structural model, an online survey was conducted among Chinese netizens using demographic quotas (i.e., age, gender, and education). The results of this survey indicated that hedonic experience was positively correlated with entertainment preference and political interest and exerted a positive mediation effect on the correlation between these two variables. By contrast, eudaimonic experience was negatively correlated with entertainment preference but positively correlated with political interest, and it exerted a negative mediation effect on the correlation between entertainment preference and political interest. Thus, despite a subtle positive mediation effect of hedonic experience on the aforementioned correlation, the total effect of entertainment preference on political interest is negative because the direct effect is negative and relatively robust.
