Abstract
A process was developed to synthesize a calcium phosphate material that is compositionally and structurally similar to materials which constitute animal/human bone structures. Spherical hydroxyapatite powders containing nanocrystalline particulates were synthesized by a sol-gel process. These powders were used to synthesize bone-skeleton structures with interconnected pores forming cellular structures. The mechanical properties, including the elastic moduli, bending and compressive strengths, and hardness of these synthetic bones were measured and were found to compare well with natural bones.
