Abstract
A processible conjugated copolymer poly(aryleneethynylene) containing electron-affinitive moiety of 2,7-diethynylfluorene and hole-transport moiety of thiophene (Th-PFE) is synthesized via a Pd-catalyzed coupling reaction. The polymer possesses a weight average molecular weight of 19700 and a polydispersity index of 2.26. Th-PFE shows excellent thermal stability with a decomposition temperature of 398°C. The HOMO, LUMO energy levels and band gap of Th-PFE are determined to be -5.31, -2.48 and 2.83eV, respectively, using cyclic voltammetry. Th-PFE in CHCl3 solution shows strong emission around 444nm. Light-emitting diode with a structure of ITO/copper phthalocyanine/Th-PFE/Ca/Ag emits a nearly white light with an external quantum efficiency of 0.01%. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
