Abstract
Land reclamation from sea is one of the foremost considerations in different regimes to meet their growing space requirements for new development projects. For example, to alleviate the limited land availability amid other development constraints, land reclamation from sea has been given the top priority for building up of the urban land banks especially in Hong Kong and Singapore. However, such reclamation considerations have been confronted with several critical challenges such as under political, cultural, and sustainability aspects. An ongoing Hong Kong-based research is focused to develop suitable multi-criteria based decision support frameworks for dealing with the sustainable development challenges in land reclamation scenarios. This paper presents a synopsis on sustainable land reclamations with different constructs such as (a) force-field analysis, (b) ‘Political, Economical, Social, Technological, Environmental and Legal’ (PESTEL) analysis, (c) ‘Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis, and (d) conflict analysis.
