Abstract
Surface modication of aluminum alloys has attracted much interest because of their wide commercial applications in the aeronautics, astronautics, and other fields. In this work, we determine the optimal experimental parameters in the plasma immersion ion implantation and ion beam enhanced deposition (PIII-IBED) of Al-6061. Several different factors in the implantation and deposition process are investigated sysmatically, including the ion species, temperature, and effects of hydrogen addition. The modified results by PIII and IBED are compared using various characterization methods such as friction test, wear tracks, microhardness, anode polarization curves, scanning electron microscopy, and chemical composition determination. Friction test results show that samples treated with oxygen plasma under high temperature achieves a lower friction coefficient and better wear resistance. In order to understand the strengthening mechanism, x-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) is also employed.
