Abstract

Low-cost and non-cytotoxic ternary Zr-Ti-Ag thin film metallic glasses (TFMGs) were synthesized by DC magnetron sputtering. Results revealed that Ag addition enhanced the crystallization resistance and thermal stability of TFMGs. An appropriate Ag addition favored the mechanical property and corrosion resistance of TFMGs, while the excessive Ag addition had the opposite effect. Moreover, Ag did not directly form the passive film but altered the passive film stability and anti-corrosion capacity of TFMGs by inducing the disordered atomic arrangement, forming a dense microstructure, and tuning the corrosion-resistant Zr and Ti components. With low Young's modulus of 116.2 GPa and passive current density of 0.45 × 10−7 A/cm2, the TFMG with an Ag target sputtering power of 11 W exhibited superior corrosion resistance, suggesting its application potential as biomaterials. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.
