N2 - Research on some of the reactions of atmospheric SO//2 is reviewed. The uptake of SO//2 by aqueous solutions has been found to be controlled largely by gas-phase diffusion, and the potential of the ocean as a major sink for pollutant SO//2 has been assessed. The oxidation of SO//2 in the atmospheric aqueous phase has been found to be very complex. The reaction is catalyzed by metal ions and its order and rate varies with pH and ionic strength. The biochemical mechanism of one point of attack of plant leaves by SO//2 has been studied. The damaging effect of atmospheric SO//2 on Fe and Zn surfaces has been studied.
