N2 - This investigation confirms that students are experiencing various difficulties in their learning, and the analysis provides detailed delineation of students' learning problems. While it is an undeniable fact that these students were inadequate in their abilities for learning in a university setting, the encouraging side is that there was evidence that they aspired to teachers and teaching that could help them to develop as learners. The obvious conclusion is that help with learning to learn is absolutely necessary and is expected by students. The rich data provide enlightening answers to the two aspects about learning to learn that our investigation set out to find: the kinds of help with learning to learn that students need, and the approach to providing such help which would be more appropriate. © 2004 by The Hong Kong University Press, HKU.
