Structural, mechanical, and tribological characteristics of diamond-like carbon coatings

Abstract

The chapter introduces the diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings and their structural, mechanical, and tribological characteristics. The introduction briefly describes the history, applications, and market revenue of DLC coatings. The DLC nanocomposite coatings are described in details, which are made by doping foreign elements to enhance the specific features of a pure DLC coating. The chapter particularly addresses the chromium-doped DLC nanocomposite coatings for their manufacturing and collective changes in the structural, mechanical, and tribological features by doping chromium fraction up to 50% in the amorphous DLC matrix. The work identifies the suitable chromium fraction, that is, 5%-10% which can deliver the best performance. In addition, the last section briefly describes the fresh trends for improvement in DLC coatings.
