Abstract
In this paper, we present an algorithm to improve the performance of skeletonization methods for Chinese characters. In this algorithm, the strokes of a character are extracted and analyzed first and then the isolated strokes are skeletonized. The efficacy of the algorithm is shown by comparing the results of several thinning methods applied with and without the stroke extraction procedure.
