Abstract
Clear day solar heat gain factors (SHGFs) from ASHRAE handbook provide data for architects and engineers to calculate peak cooling loads for sizing air-conditioning equipment. Recently, average-day SHGFs have become important and more practical for estimating energy use. This paper describes a procedure for calculating hourly SHGFs based on measured horizontal global and diffuse radiation from 1991 to 1993 at the City Polytechnic of Hong Kong. Characteristics of the findings and their implications for building design are discussed. © 1995 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
