Abstract

Past research has not been adequate in understanding contemporary Hong Kong Chinese social values, despite its reliance on students and other particular samples to unfold their personal values. This study employed an adequately large and representative sample of 1,085 Hong Kong Chinese to measure their social values that eventually identified three orientations, paternalism, liberalism, and egalitarianism. The measures drew heavily on Chinese culture, including Confucian ethics, paternalism, and societal solidarity. They proved to be valid by means of structural equation modeling that incorporated a hierarchical factor model and a model of structural relationships with social characteristics. Equipped with the evidence of validation, the study reveals that Hong Kong Chinese had moderately high orientations to paternalism, liberalism, and egalitarianism. Particularly, they were highly in favor of both free choice and Confucian ethics. Moreover, differences in the social value orientations are attributable to differences in sexes, ages, classes, and education levels. Results show that both Chinese and Western cultures and the structure and norms of society tend to shape social values of Hong Kong people.
