Abstract

In recent years, we have witnessed a surge in popular and scholarly interest in the power of social media-based movements to challenge authority and hierarchy and promote individual freedom and democracy. While the dominant discourse on the topic can be described as ranging somewhere between techno-optimistic and techno-utopian, other views—realistic, skeptical and dystopian, have also emerged.
