Abstract

As the world grapples with the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the imperative to understand and integrate resilient housing solutions takes center stage. This research embarks on an in-depth exploration of the social dimensions of resilient housing, recognizing that the design and functionality of living spaces play a pivotal role in shaping the well-being, mental health, and societal resilience of communities during and beyond pandemics. The primary objective of this research is to dissect and illuminate the intricate social dynamics embedded within resilient housing. Focusing on the impact of housing design on individual and collective well-being, the study aims to identify the key elements that contribute to societal resilience and cohesion in the face of public health crises. The research focuses on three following aspects:
1. Community Well-Being and Mental Health, where the ways in which resilient housing can positively influence community well-being and mental health are explored. Through an analysis of spatial configurations, amenities, and communal spaces, the research aims to discern how housing design fosters a sense of belonging, reduces isolation, and promotes positive mental health outcomes, especially in times of crisis.
2. Social Cohesion and Interaction, where the role of resilient housing in fostering social cohesion is investigated. How can design elements encourage community interaction? This part assesses the effectiveness of communal spaces, shared amenities, and collaborative infrastructure in creating environments that facilitate social bonds, mutual support, and a resilient sense of community.
3. Inclusive design principles, where the inclusivity strategies of resilient housing design are explored. This includes considerations for accessibility, adaptability, and the accommodation of diverse lifestyles. By scrutinizing the design principles through the lens of inclusivity, the research aims to ensure that resilient housing strategies benefit all members of society equitably.
By using a mixed-methods approach, the research incorporates qualitative and quantitative analyses. Case studies of existing resilient housing projects are examined to derive insights into successful social design elements. Additionally, community surveys and interviews are conducted to gather firsthand perspectives on the social impact of resilient housing. By triangulating data from multiple sources, the research aim was to present a comprehensive understanding of the social dimensions of resilient housing. By shedding light on the social intricacies of resilient housing, the paper aspires to inform the development of design guidelines that prioritize societal resilience and community well-being.
