Abstract
Two simple autoclave systems have been developed to produce standard tubular and flat fibre composite test specimens, using existing laboratory facilities to effect pressure, vacuum and curing temperature. An inadequate vacuum resulted in internal defects such as delamination. The choise of the vacuum bagging material and the correct application of the release agent used affected the finished surfaces of the pieces. With an intact and adequate vacuum, and the right bagging film, good quality specimens were produced using a manual layup epoxy-fibreglass system, having strengths of up to 850±65 MPa for an alternating 0 90 continuous fibre ply system, and 220 ± 18 MPa for a continuus random ply system, with a thickness variation for flat plate specimen of 5 ±0·05 mm.
