Sharing the same sky: Narratives from Hong Kong

July 1, 2007 marked the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong’s reunification with the People’s Republic of China. Hong Kong, formerly a British colony for over 150 years, now share the same sky with China in a “one country, two systems” framework of governance. Educationally, what has transpired in Hong Kong’s traditionally exam-driven curriculum where “teachers talk and students listen” since it has been de-colonized and returned to the motherland? Issues such as identity, culture, patriotism, civic education, democratization, and globalization emerge. Using the research methodology of narrative inquiry, the paper reviews educational developments through the experiences of learners and teachers and its implications for schools. Their narratives tell of transformations, tensions, and hopes for the future.
