Abstract

An adaptive temperature controller for a vehicle air-conditioning system is presented. The temperature of the vehicle compartment is controlled digitally using a microcomputer. The control is realized by varying the air flow rate of a fan-coil (cooling) unit. Two algorithms are analyzed: a self-tuning control algorithm and an adaptive proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller using a recursive-least-squares estimator. Both algorithms provide promising results: a steady-state error of 0.1°C is obtained. In the adaptive PID controller the steady-state error, risetime, and overshoot are found to be dependent upon the output filter.
