Abstract

The self-passivation of Fe-40Cr alloys with additions of 0.1 to 0.2% of ruthenium, palladium and platinum in reducing acid solutions is reviewed. Detailed analysis of the surface films formed on these cathodic-modified alloys has been studied by Auger electron spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The role of platinum-group metals in promoting the self-passivation of Fe-40Cr alloys is discussed. Furthermore, the effect of further additions of Mo or V on the self-passivation of Fe-Cr-Ru alloys in hydrochloric acid solution is also examined. © 1990.
