Abstract

As an integral technology growing Industry 4.0 solutions, the Internet of Things paradigm is becoming increasingly pervasive in industrial application spaces. However, increasing instances of malicious attacks on industrial processes are observed as an effect resulting from the exposure of sensitive, isolated, safety-critical operations to the wider cyber environment. To be able to protect the entire application space from malicious attack, appropriate security services need to be identified at varying levels of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) stack and implementation of the appropriate mechanisms required to protect the industrial space from malicious actors.
The inclusion of cyber and sensing capability in industrial operations brings with it new challenges in providing a security scheme capable of protecting the industrial attack space without impacting the highly restricted resources and deadlines seen in industrial applications. This work serves to identify the security challenges that may be encountered in IIoT networks, highlight the recommendations being made by Industry bodies for appropriate IIoT security and analyse the trade-offs that may occur as a result of the implementation of security services in terms of the possible device size, performance, memory requirements and monetary cost restrictions.
