Revisiting the Social Media Use and Political Participation Relations: A Replication and Extension of Differential Gains Model

Research output: Conference PapersRGC 32 - Refereed conference paper (without host publication)peer-review

Abstract

The media use and political participation relations have been explored on an ongoing basis. This study replicated Scheufele’s Differential Gains Model (2002) in a Chinese social media context (Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and Singapore) and extended it by proposing a multi-dimensional political participation typology. Under the lens of the typology, however, the interaction effect suggested by Scheufele disappears when it comes to offline protest participation.
