Abstract
This review examines a number of multiple access protocols suitable for satellite data communication, and compares their performance under various traffic conditions. These protocols include fixed assignment, random access and capacity reservation schemes. In each case, there is a trade off between complexity in implementation and performance. A suitable protocol can only be selected if these relationships are understood.
