    Abstract

Rivers are key features of the economy, society, and culture of many countries. However, rivers are misused and mismanaged for short-term economic gains, leading to the degradation of many of these rivers. They need to be studied and managed from headwaters to deltas with interdisicplinary research and international collaboration where rivers cross borders. We do not 'respect rivers' sufficiently, yet, to do this properly.
