Abstract

Residents appear to have appreciable stakes in urban renewal that affect their support for and thus the success of the renewal. To gain their support, aid provided by the urban renewal authority tends to be necessary. In view of the paucity of empirical research on the contribution of the aid to the support, the present study taps the contribution with a survey of 1,313 residents in urban renewal sites in Hong Kong, China. Results supported the key hypothesis that aid received from the urban renewal authority showed a positive effect on support for the renewal in the resident. Moreover, results showed that the effect was stronger with greater stakes as indicated by the resident's status of relocation, residency in the site, and homeownership. Notably, the effects of the aid, residency, and homeownership were stronger in the resident scheduled for urban renewal than in the resident awaiting the confirmation of the renewal. The results imply the importance of fair exchange between the urban renewal authority and residents, especially those with greater stakes, to justify the renewal.
