Abstract

A new type of organicometallic complex, Cetyltrimethylammonium-bis (2-thioxo-1, 3-dithiole-4, 5-dithiolato)-copper, abbreviated as CtCu, is synthesized and its third-order optical nonlinearity is investigated using single beam Z-scan technique at 1053 nm with 1 ns laser duration. Strong saturable absorption is observed and the excited state effective absorption cross section is σeff = 1.10 × 10-19 cm2. The absorption cross section ratio between the excited state and the ground state is 1:484. Nonlinear transmission measurement has proved the saturable absorption property further and the mechanism of the nonlinearity was discussed. All the results show that CtCu is a potential material in the application to laser pulse compression in the near-infrared region.
