Reliability engineering in power electronic converter systems

Abstract

Power electronics has progressively gained important status in electrical power generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption. With more than 70% of electricity processed through power electronic systems, recent research has endeavored to improve its reliability performance to comply with more stringent constraints on cost of ownership, safety, and availability in various applications. This chapter serves to bridge the advancements between the disciplines of power electronics and reliability engineering and to give an overall introduction of the following chapters in this book. It briefly discusses the following topics: motivations for more reliable power electronic converter systems, the historical development of power electronics and reliability engineering, the physics-of-failure (PoF) of power electronics components, design for reliability (DFR), reliability and accelerated testing, strategies to improve reliability performance, and the challenges and opportunities in this multi-disciplinary area. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology and its licensors 2025.
