    Abstract

Since the onset of China’s reform and the introduction of the “opening up” policy in 1978, the Pearl River Delta region (PRD) has been a key driver of the country’s remarkable economic transformation. This economic zone, which includes the cities of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Foshan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Jiangmen, as well as parts of Huizhou and Zhaoqing, has experienced rapid economic growth in the past decades. In 2013, the gross domestic product (GDP) of the PRD grew at an average of 9.4 per cent and accounted for 9.3 per cent of the country’s total GDP and 27.5 per cent of national exports. The region is also a global manufacturing base, playing a leading role in the production of toys, footwear, lighting fixtures, furniture and other products (HKTDC 2015).
