Abstract
In this paper, we have described the architecture and generic components of a prototypical REDUCE system, which has been designed and implemented as an experimental vehicle for motivating, verifying, and demonstrating our theoretical and algorithmic work on fundamental issues, such as consistency maintenance and concurrency control, underlying the construction of REDUCE systems. This prototype system has also been used as an innovative communication tool among physically dispersed members of our research group residing at four universities across Australia and Hong Kong. The REDUCE software system is implemented as a stand-alone Java application, so it can run on a wide range of platforms, such as Windows NT, Windows 95, and Sun's Solaris.
