Abstract
Arguably the most learned scholar in modern China, Qian Zhongshu is still relatively unknown in the West despite the importance of his works for world literature and for better cross-cultural understanding and communication between China and the West. Given the rise of world literature as a most exciting new approach to literary studies in a global context, and given the importance of East-West cross-cultural understanding, it is high time that we knew Qian Zhongshu's work and its tremendous value. By discussing his life and his works, not only his major critical works written in classical Chinese, but also his collection of critical essays written in modern vernacular, this essay purports not only to introduce Qian Zhongshu as a distinguished comparatist and humanist to a wider audience outside China, but also to argue for the importance of a truly global perspective in the study of world literature. © Klincksieck.
