Abstract

A dimming module that can generate current pulses of variable pulse width, frequency, and amplitude supplying to LEDs from a DC source with high voltage ripple will be presented. The module is connected in series with the LEDs and acts as a buffer between the DC source and LED. Thus, its volt-ampere (VA) rating is much smaller than the power rating of the LED and the power density of the overall system is maximized. The module can regulate the LED current pulses, even if the source voltage has a wide fluctuation. The operating principle of the whole system is described in the paper. A 400V/100W prototype has been built and tested with a 330V LED string with the source having a ripple of ±20V. The peak value of the LED current pulses has a variation of ±1.5%. Its dynamic behaviors under voltage fluctuation will also be investigated.
