Abstract

The growing popularity of web services provides a new opportunity for enabling adaptive workflow management to meet the needs of globalized e-commerce. Web services can provide new ways of system integration and interoperability. In this study, we integrate web services and object-oriented techniques into an Open Kernel Workflow Architecture, which contains three components, the Open Kernel Framework, the Semantic Translator, and the Universal Role Binder. We show how this architecture can enable advanced features such as dynamic addition of new workflow pattern types or process definition semantics, universal workflow resource management, runtime translation or visibility control of multiple process languages, etc.
