世界文学并非世界所有文学之总和，而是世界各民族文学经典之汇集。目前超出自身文化范围、在全世界流通的作品，大多是西方文学经典，而非西方包括中国文学的经典，尚须通过优质的翻译和评论，才可能成为世界文学的经典。本书讨论经典、翻译、中国文学与世界文学之关系，使读者能了解当前讨论得十分热烈的世界文学诸问题。
