Abstract
The paper addressed issues about art criticism and art education in relation to the idea of “wicked problems” (a concept proposed by design and planning theorist H. Rittel). A wicked problem is one where the problem itself is not defined at the outset. To find the solution of the problem is also to find the definition of the problem. I argue that artistic research often faces problems of this sort, and I explain some of the implications of this idea for the field of contemporary media art.
