Abstract
A simple theory is presented to describe the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the birefringence of a coated birefringent optical fibre. Accurate numerical results are used to verify the theory. It is found that the pressure sensitivity of the fibre can be greatly reduced or enhanced by using appropriate fibre glasses and coatings.
