Abstract

The security problems raised by using standard technologies for both wired and wireless communication in industrial automation have a high potential to endanger safety. To counteract them, an encryption and authentication system was designed based on chaos-theoretical cryptography, on post-processing of pseudo-random bit sequences to enhance their randomness, and on a general ciphering device adding redundancy to and blurring symbol boundaries in transmission units. The system features packet-length encryption and frequent modification of the employed pseudo-random bit generators' parameters to come close to onetime-pad encryption.
