Abstract

From 2009 to 2015, filmmaker Huang Wenhai (who’s also worked as Wang Bing’s DOP) followed a group of workers and activists at Southern China’s giant metal factories. Alternating between close-quarter meetings, dangerous and heavily repressed acts of rebellion and unforgettable scenes of factory work, We the Workers gives us an unprecedented look at the long-term fight to help create a collective awareness surrounding work conditions in China. The filmmaker – and his protagonists – ran serious risks to give millions of nameless workers a face, making a film of perseverance and sacrifice. This is an extremely important film and a just portrayal of working conditions in contemporary China. It is also an astonishing epic about justice and resistance.
