Abstract

Increases in economic exchanges between China and other countries have encouraged the international emergence of Chinese-invested shopping malls, and this process has been accelerated by the Belt-and-Road Initiative. This chapter uses detailed case studies to analyse and compare two largest Chinese-invested shopping malls, Hualing Tbilisi Sea Plaza in Tbilisi, Georgia, and Hualing Integrated Market in Urumqi, China. The analysis investigates the reasons these shopping malls were developed and the influences of these malls on urbanisation. The economic and political incentives of the B&R are the initiatives for the Chinese-invested malls, bringing prosperous activities to the B&R cities. This chapter discusses the architectural and urban influences of shopping spaces developed in accordance with the Belt-and-Road Initiative on local urban development. The Chinese design codes and construction efficiency provide good examples to building activities in other B&R related countries, even these prototypes need to be more adapted to local environment. This study will enrich the existing literature on the Belt-and Road-Initiative from a spatial perspective, and on the literature of shopping spaces and urbanisation in China and the South Caucasus region, providing insights for future Chinese-invested building activities in B&R cities and countries.
