Abstract

This paper investigates the usage variation of the happiness-denoting near-synonyms (HNs), including kuaile 快乐, yukuai 愉快, xiyue 喜悦, huanle 欢乐, gaoxing 高兴, kaixin 开心, and huankuai 欢快. The seven words can all be translated as ‘happy’ and are taken to be interchangeable in meaning.
