Abstract
This paper identifies the process of professionalization of HRM in a Chinese context. It provides a way to explain how the professionalization of HR practitioners is occurring in China combined with an overview of Chinese professions in general, and with particular illustrative reference to the more established occupations of law and accountancy. The main purpose of the paper, however, is to identify the unique challenges and opportunities China is facing with respect to the professionalization of HRM. Through analyzing professionalization of HRM in a Chinese context, the paper provides a much needed understanding of the characteristics of the HR profession and of the strategies and policies being pursued by the state to facilitate this process.
