Abstract

Pre-service fatigue due to insufficient rest and alcohol intake post high safety risks on construction workers during task execution. Conventional on-site pre-service screening mainly relies on the project manager's experience and workers' appearance, due to the lack of a reliable and objective assessment tool. Thus, to fill the gap, this study proposes to design mentally-intensive simulative tasks to assess the fatigue level of construction workers. A hybrid kinematic-electroencephalograph (EEG) signal processing system was developed to quantitatively assess the workers' mental status so that unqualified workers can be identified before tasks. Protections and training then can be provided accordingly to mitigate the potential risks associated with pre-service fatigue.
