Abstract

More green buildings including subway stations are being built in the Asia-Oceania regions. There are potential fire hazards as in other green constructions in the transport system. A subway station in Hong Kong is taken as an example to study the potential fire hazards behind the green constructions. This station has natural ventilation design utilizing wind action. The station is an interchange station to an entertainment park. Passengers are mainly tourists who might be carrying luggage up to 23 kg to give high fire loads. Burning these combustible items would cause a large fire with smoke spread to areas crowded with passengers. Potential smoke hazard due to smoke spread in this green station was studied by Computational Fluid Dynamics. Scenarios with and without wind effect were studied with a 10 MW design fire. Results of the simulation show that wind effect plays an important role in providing natural ventilation.
