Abstract

Max Hattler was one of 13 invited artists invited by Lago Film Fest 2023 to respond to the postcard theme with a creative work.

The postcard is characterised by a number of elements: it is sent to someone far away, creating a link with that person; it has a picture as its main element and combines images and words with its writeable back. It is concise because of its brevity and the combination of words and images; it shows a private text without the need for an envelope; it relates known and never-seen places, distant places and familiar people.

A video postcard takes into account all these characteristics by trying to transpose them into the video format. We asked some artists, who have participated in the LFF (Lago Film Festival) in the past and are therefore familiar with it, to participate in this game. The rules of the game are simple: one minute of video, a predetermined postcard back, 16:9 (or 9:16) format, no sound. It is important to keep in mind what has been said before about what a postcard represents.

The result, visible during the days of the festival, is the thirteen video postcards that arrived at Lago. These video postcards, taken individually, somehow manage to give an insight into the work of each artist: from the stringent choice of subject, to the forcibly refined style, to the binding and almost aseptic conclusion, with no reference to audio.

The artist’s features are illuminated for a single minute, like a frozen instant, a description of a moment in their artistic career.

Taken collectively, the video postcards take on the value of a minor or applied art, a popular art. Applied and popular arts, often free from the peculiar authorial trait that serves as a constraint of differentiation from the common and from the authenticity of belonging to a name, become instead more significant in offering a general and comprehensive view of the style and trend of a period.

Through the exercise of the video postcard, the thirteen artists provide a glimpse of current independent cinema or, at least, of that which has passed through the Lago festival.
