Abstract
Mangrove wetland with woody perennial plant communities is a unique intertidal ecosystem in tropical and subtropical regions. The ecosystem is specially adapted to stressful environments, including high salinity, waterlogging, alternating aerobic and anaerobic conditions and unstable substratum. Mangrove wetland has significant ecological and socio-economic values, but it is also subject to human disturbance, especially toxic pollutants from waste and wastewater discharges. This talk will discuss the oxidative stress of toxic organic pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs); the responses and tolerance of mangrove plants to pollutants in wastewater and contaminated sediment; the removal and transformation of pollutants in mangrove wetland and the mechanisms involved.
