Abstract
The mechanism of Plea Leniency was formally introduced in the People’s Republic of China (China) in 2018. This new justice system was designed for the purpose that defendants are encouraged to plead guilty and accept punishment in exchange for both substantive and procedural leniency. This chapter aims to tease out a theoretical and practical trajectory of plea leniency and the way it impacts on the power relations of stakeholders in the Chinese criminal justice system. By analysing the benefits and challenges of plea leniency, this chapter sheds light on the status quo of this confession-based program in the context of the country’s criminal justice reform aimed at bringing about greater fairness and efficiency. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024
