Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to LTE (E-UTRA) physical layer design. The physical layer covers the downlink transmission from the evolved node B (eNB) base transceiver station to the user equipment (UE), and the uplink transmission from the UE to eNB. 3GPP has selected a new OFDMA modulation scheme for the physical layer. The chapter describes air interface multiplexing and channel coding according to 36.212, covering transport channel (TrCH) and control channel information. Hybrid automatic repeat requests (HARQ) and adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) procedures and the parameters used by the system to report channel state information are then discussed, followed by a description of two important physical layer procedures: cell search and synchronization using the primary and secondary synchronization signals in conjunction with the BCH; and the random access procedure using the PRACH. Finally, the chapter presents a discussion on physical layer measurements and radio resource management.
