Abstract

This paper reports an efficient method to measure the phase noise of free-running microwave voltage-controlled oscillators using a general-purpose spectrum analyzer. The system tracks the frequency drifting signal by using a charge pump phase-locked loop. The measurements taken on a 1.9-GHz oscillator demonstrates the system accuracy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
