Abstract

A dialogue on changing regional "sound" and "print" cultures between Dr Ryo Ikeshiro and Dr Edward Sanderson, followed by a performance by Ikeshiro.

Can heritage be heard and not seen? Beyond bricks and mortar, what are the possibilities and intentions behind the building up and conserving of "immaterial heritage" through sound and print practices?

For this conversation, Dr Ryo Ikeshiro shares the findings from his work including the recent text, "Charting the Scene(s) of Sonic Arts in Hong Kong" (Organised Sound, Cambridge University Press, 2022 with Damien Charrieras and PerMagnus Lindborg) with Sounds Like Print project co-curator Dr Edward Sanderson, whose own PhD research addresses similar topics in the context of the Mainland.

The discussion draws on how local artists negotiate the changing relationship of sound between the "underground and academic milieux" in their own work and that of others, while bringing in examples from Sounds Like Print and other parts of the world. As scholars both writing on these subjects, Ikeshiro and Sanderson ponder their own methodological approaches, to ask: what role does academic and art print publishing, along with evolving contemporary media formats play in documenting the development of sonic art scenes?

This Tai Kwun Conversation is a crossover event with the Artists' Book Library – a freely accessible collection of Asian artists' publications that have been created as artworks – and the associated project, Sounds Like Print, looking at the interplay of "sound" and "print" through a display of objects and a number of changing installations and public programmes by contemporary arts practitioners.

This conversation will be conducted in English, with simultaneous interpretation in Cantonese, followed by a live Q&A session and special performance by Ryo Ikeshiro.

Please note that the galleries close at 7 pm, so remember to visit the Sounds Like Print project in the Artists' Book Library before attending the conversation.
