Abstract

Electro-optic modulators operating at high millimeter-wave (MMW) frequencies, namely MMW-optic modulators, could become indispensable components for future MMW systems. In this paper, we present a detailed theoretical study of the performance of thin-film lithium niobate Mach-Zehnder modulator at frequencies up to 300 GHz. Our numerical analysis shows that by carefully engineering the velocity matching between optical and MMW signals, it is possible to achieve a high 6-dB bandwidth of > 300 GHz for a 5-mm device and RF Vπ as low as 6 V at 300 GHz for a 10-mm device.
