Abstract

The present study aims at examining the relationships among parenting style, social axioms and children's creativity in gifted and typical children. Participants included 48 parents of typical children and 43 parents of gifted children who were recruited from the parent association for gifted children and by convenient sampling. Parents completed a questionnaire consisting the following instruments: social axiom - reward for creativity (Leung Bond, 2009), parent rearing style (Shelton, Frick, Wooten, 1996), and creativity characteristics (Renzulli, Smith, White, Callahan, Hartmann, 1976), and demographic data of parents and their children. Parents of gifted children reported significantly higher creativity in their children, more accepting rearing style and higher parental involvement when compared with those of typical children. Parental beliefs in reward for creativity was positively correlated with accepting rearing style and creativity characteristics in children. Implications and limitations to parenting gifted children will be discussed.
