Abstract

As the less expensive alternative, subtitling has been the most popular form of audiovisual translation in Hong Kong. Movies and television programs have been subtitled for wider distribution all over the world. Cultural barriers will be a major issue in subtitling. The multi-modal nature of audiovisual translation will make the subtitling task more flexible. In this paper, the various technical, linguistic and cultural constraints encountered in the subtitling practice in Hong Kong will be discussed with examples of movies made in Hong Kong and mainland China. Different translation strategies will lead to the different orientation towards foreignization or domestication.
